Maria de Medeiros

Maria de Medeiros ( Maria de Medeiros Esteves Vitorino de Almeida ) is an actress and Portuguese director born the August 19th 1965 with Lisbon (Portugal).

She in particular played in film of Quentin Tarantino Pulp Fiction .

In 2000, it carried out the film Capitaines of April on the Révolution of the eyelets of April 1974 in Portugal.

Biography

Maria de Medeiros was born with Lisbon in a family from intellectuals. His/her mother is journalist, her father pianist, type-setter, leader and historian of the music, names Antonio Victorino d' Almeida. She lived all her childhood in Vienna in Austria, then followed her parents to Lisbon, following the Revolution of the Eyelets in 1974. She made the totality of her schooling in French colleges. At the fifteen years age, she interprets its first role with the cinema in Silvestre of João César Monteiro. Still teenager, it also starts to approach the traditional theater under the direction of Philippe Fridman.

At ten eight years, it settles in France where it begins studies of philosophy before integrating the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of Arts and Techniques of the Theater in the class of Brigitte Jaques.

Two years later, it enters to the Conservatoire Higher National of Dramatic art of Paris and follows the classes of Michel Bouquet and Jean-Pierre Vincent. At the same time, she plays theater of the Athenaeum, Elvire, Jouvet 40, with Philippe Clévenot, under the direction of Brigitte Jaques. This part will be taken again three years of continuation and will carry out the troop in many countries of the world.

Thereafter, Maria will alternate plays and films in France and abroad. She plays Corneille, Federico Garcia Lorca, Mairet, Calderón, under the direction of Brigitte Jaques, Jorge Lavelli, Jean-Marie Villégier, Jose Luis Gum, in Chaillot, the Theater of the Hill, the Theater of Odéon.

In parallel, it turns to France under the direction of Chantal Ackerman, Christine Laurent, Suzanne Schiffman, Jean-Charles Tacchella, Serge Moati, Didier the Fisherman, Bernard Rapp, Christian de Challonges, Gerard Pullicino, John Lvoff, Patrick Braoudé, Richard Berry, Jean-Pierre Améris inter alia.

To the United States, Maria turns in great productions like Henry & June of Philip Kaufman or Pulp Fiction of Quentin Tarantino and also in independent films.

Maria remains also very faithful to the Portuguese cinema where it turns with Manoel de Oliveira, Teresa Villaverde, Luis Galvão Such, Joaquim Leitão.

She is present in the Spanish cinema in films like Macho (Huevos de Oro) of Bigas Luna, the detective and death of Gonzalo Suarez or Airbag of Juanma Bajo Ulloa. She also turns with realizers English, Canadian, Italian, German, Austrian, Japanese, Brazilian…

In France, it is the interpreter of some telefilms, under the direction in particular of Joyce Buñuel, Robert Enrico or Miguel Courtois. More recently, it is one of the protagonists of the series Venus and Apollon of Tonie Marshall on Arte.

In addition to her activity as actress, Maria de Medeiros starts towards the twenty years age to carry out courts and means-measurings of which Fragment II, d´après the part of Samuel Beckett, and the Death of the Prince, d´après the part of Fernando Pessoa, with Luis Miguel Cintra.

In 1999, it directs its first feature film, Capitaines of April (official Selection Cannes 2000), on the Revolution of the Eyelets, for which it obtains the Grand Prix of the International festival of São Paulo in Brazil, the Price Globo de Ouro of best film to Portugal and several prices of the public in France.

Thereafter, it carries out a documentary feature film, I love you, me either - Artists and critics and court-measurings of order, in particular for a film commemorating the 450 years of the town of São Paulo, at the sides of many international realizers, and for the “Cannes Talents” of Adami.

As an actress, it was rewarded by the Price Gerard Philippe in 1990 and by several prices for interpretation in various international festivals for cinema. It thus received the " Coppa Volpi" with the best actress with the festival of Venice in 1994 for film Two brothers, my sister of Teresa Villaverde. Two " Globos de Ouro" better interpretation were also allotted to him in Portugal for Adam and Eve and Capitaines of April.

Maria often sang during her career of actress within the framework of plays or films, in particular under the direction of Jerome Savary during the creation of “Zazou” to the National theater of Chaillot and recently in film of Guy Maddin The saddest music in the world .
