Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo is a Portuguese political woman born the January 18th 1930.

She remains the only woman to have exerted the function of Prime Minister to the Portugal of the fifth constitutional government after the approval of the constitution.

Youth

It has a training of engineer in industrial chemistry in 1953, and it is graduate of " Instituto Superior Técnico". It was president of the female catholic university youth of 1952 with 1956. From this date, it also directed Pax Romana (Movimento Internacional back Estudantes Católicos), in 1958.

Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo belonged to this small catholic minority which during the years of dictatorship militated for the democracy whereas the hierarchy was largely compromised with controlling l" Estado Novo ".

Political career

Near to the Socialists, it was a Prime Minister of transition. Eminently respected, it is the author of several articles and works on the Catholic church, the democracy and the women's right. She succumbs to an mild heart attack the July 10th 2004

  • 1974 - 1975: Minister for the Social Affairs.

  • 1976 - 1979: ambassadress of Portugal to UNESCO.

  • 1979 - 1980: Prime Minister of Portugal.

  • 1980 - 1986: Consulting for President Ramalho Eanes

  • 1986 : candidate with the presidential election of Portugal (7,3%).

  • 1986 : Founder of the Movement for the Deepening of the democracy

  • 1987 - 1989: deputy PS with the European Parliament.
