Maria Judite de Carvalho

Biography

Maria Judite de Carvalho is a writer and painter Lisboète, born in 1921 and deceased in her birthplace in 1998. She was the woman of the writer Portuguese Urbano Tavares Rodrigues. She also lived in Belgium and France, in particular at the time of the Dictature of Salazar. She held during several years of the chronicles on things seen and heard in newspapers Portuguese.

Its work, started in 1959 with the short account All these people, Mariana… which gives its title to a compilation of short texts, counts among strangest but also among most interesting of the XXe century in Europe. Without showing an unrestrained avant-gardism but while developing a singular originality, its novels and news (often short) are characterized by a freedom of tone, particularly ironic, and an apparent lightness under which is profiled many existential questions of importance. The writing is characterized by a minimalism which, purer banality can make emerge the fantastic one or the abysses of the anguish.

The editions of the Difference undertook, since the end of the year eighty, the publication of its work in French language in a translation of Simone Biberfeld.
