The near total of the catalog of films consists of French films. Some go until qualifying it “superstar”, expression usually reserved for actors having a greater notoriety than that of Maria Casarès.
More objectively, the film enthusiasts agree “in general” to retain in priority the four outstanding roles held in the années 1940: Children of the paradise , Ladies of the Bois de Boulogne , Chartreuse of Parma and Orphée (Cocteau).
Theater
Maria Casarès is, without any doubt, the largest tragic actress French of second half of the 20th century - those which had happiness to attend the representations of the Festival of Avignon, received, in the middle, the most enormous blow of emotion: its role of Lady Macbeth (the scene of sleepwalking especially) will remain in the memory. Galician of Spanish birth and of nationality, it was the most outstanding actress of theater of years 50/60 - Passing from horrible the Drame shakespearien with the primesautery of Marivaux, of Camus to Tchekhov… only remain its films, alas, because those which, too young people today, cannot know the force of emotion, the sensuality and this voice with null another similar, broken and chevrotante say some, but oh how much envoûtante. And this laughter! … An anecdote over the time of 1980: Maria will have also played with Claude Jade. She tells: “In 1980, I played Junie in Britannicus . Maria was Agrippine. She was astonishing. Of an end of the part to the other, she was inhabited, quivering. Its manner of saying the alexandrines held of the incantation. It broke the worms with a violence contained which burst like an extreme lava flow. It was in tears, the eyes étincelants, the trembling mouth. It gave itself body and heart. Which single actress” Wednesday and saturdays, Maria made assemble in her cabin a cold half-chicken. “It is necessary that I nourish my voice! ” (Claude Jade in its book Kisses flown away ).
