Marguerite of Provence

Marguerite of Provence (born in 1221, with Forcalquier - died the December 20th 1295, with Paris).

It is the girl of Raymond-Berenger IV, count de Provence and of Béatrice of Savoy.

White of Castille, his/her future mother-in-law, organizes the weddings of Louis IX with Marguerite in order to annex the Provence with the royal field. Thus Marguerite marries Louis IX on May 27th, 1234. She gives to her husband eleven children:

  • White (1240-1243)

  • Isabelle (1243-1271) wife in 1255 Thibault II of Champagne

  • Louis (1244-1260)

  • Philippe III Bold the (1245-1285) ép. 1: Isabelle d' Aragon, ép. 2: Marie of the Brabant

  • Jean (1248-1248)

  • Jean Tristant (1250-1270) wife in 1265 Yolande of Burgundy

  • Pierre (1251-1284) wife in 1272 Jeanne de Chatillon countess of Blois

  • White (1253-1320) wife in 1269 Ferdinand of Cerda (infant of Castille)

  • Marguerite (1254-1271) wife in 1270 Jean Ier duke of the Brabant

  • Agnes (1260-1325) wife in 1270 Robert II of Burgundy

  • Robert (1256-1318) count de Clermont

Courageous, it follows her husband in Egypt at the time of the crusade of 1248, country in which it will be confined of three as of the her children.

It is also binding on its daughter-in-law - this one having too much influence on his/her son - there though Marguerite reproduces the diagram according to which Blanche of Castille was opposed to it in its youth. It lends also support to the England, having family ties with this country, because his/her sister Eléonore is queen there.

About the last years of its life, it will try to recover Provence, its native area, without reaching that point. She will die on December 30th, 1295, at the seventy-five years age.
