Marguerite island
The Île Marguerite (in Hungarian Margit-Sziget ) is an island of the the Danube located at the center-north of Budapest, in Hungary. It is currently covered by green areas and is regarded as the “lung” of Budapest by its inhabitants.
It is connected to banks of the city: in north by the Bridge Árpád and in the south by the Bridge Marguerite.
History
The name of the island comes from Sainte Marguerite, girl of the king Béla IV, which resided at it in a convent Dominicain until its death in 1271. At that time, the island was named the Island of the Hares ( Nyulak Szigete ).
