Marguerite de Médicis

Marguerite de Médicis , (Florence, May 31st, 1612 - Parma, February 6th, 1679), duchess of Parma and Pleasure, is the wife of Edouard I {{er}} Farnèse. She was regent of Plaisance in 1635 and regent of the duchy in the 1646, year of died of her husband.

Biography

Marguerite is the girl of Cosme II of Médicis, Grand duke of Toscane and Marie Madeleine of Austria. The marriage between Marguerite and Edouard is strongly wanted by the duke Ranuce I {{er}} Farnèse to reinforce alliance between the duchy of Parma and the Grand-Duchy of Tuscany but Ranuce deceased before the ceremony of marriage.

Engagement is arranged in 1620. On this date, the two children are only 8 years old. The marriage is celebrated on October 11th, 1628 with Florence. A representation of " Mercury and Mars" put in music by Monteverdi and with texts of Claudio Achillini is played to accommodate the husbands in the Farnèse theater.

What marks the years during which the couple controls Parma are the plague of 1630, then contrast between ostentation of the court and the fiscal charge which the subjects were to support and as much for the policy pro-Frenchwoman of the duke.

According to the portraits of the time, Marguerite was not a beautiful woman what it compensated for by other charms, because pleasant, good and very quite high. With the difference of his predecessors, the duke was faithful for him, it does not exist wire illegitimate.

Marguerite dies in Parma at the 67 years age.

  • Alexandre Farnèse (January 10th, 1635 - February 18th, 1689), governor on behalf of the Habsbourgs of the Netherlands of 1680 with 1682
  • Horace (Orazio) Farnèse (January 24th, 1636 - November 2nd, 1656)
  • Catherine Farnèse (1637), sister Carmelite nun
  • Pierre (Pietro) Farnèse (April 4th, 1639 - March 4th, 1677)
