Marguerite de Courtenay-Namur

Marguerite of Courtenay , born in 1194, died in 1270, was marchioness of Namur of 1229 with 1237. It was girl of Pierre II of Courtenay, emperor Latin of Constantinople and Yolande de Hainaut

She married in first weddings Raoul Ier de Lusignan (1164 † 1219), but the marriage was cancelled in 1213. By its second marriage, Raoul will become count of Have.

She remaria in 1217 with the count Henri Ier de Vianden († 1252) and she had:

  • Mathilde, married about 1235 with Jean Angel, duke of Srem
  • Pierre († ap.1272)
  • Frederic († 1247)
  • Henri († 1267), bishop of Utrecht of 1249 with 1267
  • Philippe († 1273), count de Vianden
  • Yolande († 1283)

With died her brother Henri II (1229), benefitting from what his/her brother Baudouin was in the East, it seized the marquisat of Namur. Ferrand, count de Flandre and of Hainaut disputed the marquisat to him and attacked it. Marguerite was forced to negotiate a peace which was signed in Cambrai on November 1st 1232. In exchange of several cities Ferrand renonça in Namur.

In 1137, Baudouin II of Courtenay returned to Europe and, with the assistance of king de France and the countess of Flanders, recovered the marquisat and Marguerite withdrew herself with her husband in the county of Vianden. In 1247, Baudouin indicated it as heiress in the event of death without child (it had already son a four years old), but, after the conquest of Namur by Henri of Luxembourg, it sold her rights on the marquisat of Namur to her cousin Guy de Dampierre.

Henri de Vianden left in Holy Land in 1252. He left the administration of his county to his Philippe son and died shortly after. Marguerite withdrew herself with the monastery of Marienthal where she died the July 17th 1270.
