Marguerite Monnot
Marguerite Monnot is a pianist and French type-setter of songs and film musics, born on May 28th 1903 with Decize (Nievre), deceased on October 12th 1961 with Paris. This concert performer of exception put his immense talent at the service of the popular song. Innumerable songs interpreted by Edith Piaf ( " Milord " , " the anthem with the love " ) and a musical comedy with success ( Irma soft the ) conferred an international repute to him.
An early talent
With Decize, his/her mother is teacher, her father, Gabriel Monnot, gives courses of piano and composes of the sacred musics. Blind man since the three years age, he is the holder of the organ of the church Saint-Are, owner of the village. Marguerite expresses early musical talents. It is told that it composes “Bluette" , its first song, at the three years age. It also passes to have accompanied with the piano a singer on a lullaby by Mozart at three years and half: a service rewarded by a teddy bear. At 8 years, she interprets in concert Liszt, Chopin and Mozart. Between twelve and fifteen years, it causes its first press articles and the praises of Camille Saint-Saëns.
At 16 years, after having refused, on the authority of her parents, to belong to the official musicians of the court of Spain, Marguerite Monnot enters to the Conservatoire of Paris. She is formed under the crook of the traditional pianist Alfred Cortot and of Nadia Boulanger. She starts at 16 years a round in concerts in Europe. But at 18 years, committed for one evening in the United States, it finally does not go there, brutally stopping its young career of concert performer, due to health and, especially, trac morbid…
Its discovery of the popular song to the " TSF " will give again the taste of the composition to him. At 22 years, in 1931, it cosigne its first song, " Ah! Words of love! " , interpreted by Jane Marny. The lyric writer Marc Hémy asks him for a music for " Come in my bras" , sung by Lucienne Boyer.
International successes
Its career takes a new turn, when its " composition; The étranger" receives the prestigious Grand Prix of the Académie Charles-Cross-country race of the French disc in 1935. Sung at the beginning by Annette Lajon, " The étranger" was adopted by a young singer of cabaret then in full rise, Edith Piaf, which made its knowledge via Raymond ESA.
Marguerite Monnot will then put in music My legionary, initially sung by Marie Dubas. Sparrow, which admired Dubas, will take again in its turn the song in 1937. It will be the beginning of a profitable collaboration of almost 25 years, doubled of a major friendship between the two women. Marguerite Monnot will work with other lyric writers, like Henri Contet, during the years of occupation, writing " in particular; Where they are thus my small copains" , " You are partout" (that one will find later in the musical band of the film " It is necessary to save the soldier Ryan "). The duet Sparrow-Monnot will be the first female couple in the history of the song. They will create a hundred songs of which much will become unforgettable.
She is an international success in 1956, when " the goualante of the poor Jean " became number 1 of the sales in the United States, under the title " The poor people off Paris" , sung by Dean Martin. It makes then an escapade in the musical comedy, with Alexandre Breffort, by composing the music d'" Irma soft the ". Very innovative for its time, " Irma soft the " will be one of the rare French musical comedies to triumph with the the United Kingdom and the the United States. She will compose then the famous " Anthem with the amour" , written by Sparrow in homage to Marcel Cerdan.
Then it will be " Milord ", on words of Georges Moustaki, a music which is still an enormous international success there. She will scramble herself finally with Piaf, following her ousting with the profit of Charles Dumont, which signs the famous " I do not regret rien".
October 11th, 1961, crossing one period of depression, she dies “by distraction”, as Georges Moustaki will bring it back, of a nonneat appendicitis attack.
Edith Piaf called it affectionately " The guite". This timid woman, with the legendary distraction, refusing the honors, was always restive to make recognize her talent and her rights: she will thus refuse to sign " the bed of roses " , coécrite with Louis Gugliemi, known as Louigy, and it really reached abundance of cash only with the success of Irma soft the!
Marriage express train
Marguerite Monnot lived a long time maritally with the man of her life, Paul Peri, singer whose true name was Etienne Giannesini. July 11th, 1950, passing in front of the town hall of the 16th district of Paris, they decide, on a blow of head, to marry officially. Paul Peri manages to avoid the publication of the banns, and remunerates few tickets with passers by to play the part of the witnesses. A few minutes later, the marriage is marked…
