Marguerite II of Hainaut

Marguerite II of Avesnes born in 1311, died in the Quesnoy the June 23rd 1356, was countess of Hainaut of 1345 with 1356, of Holland and of Zealand (under the name of Marguerite Ire ) of 1345 with 1354. She was girl of Guillaume Ier, count de Hainaut, of Holland and Zealand, and Jeanne de Valois.

She married the February 25th 1324 Louis IV of Wittelsbach (1282 † 1347), duke of Bavaria, king of the Romans in 1314, then crowned emperor Louis IV ) in 1328. They had:

  • Marguerite (1325 † 1374), married in 1351 in Etienne of Hungary († 1354), duke of Croatia, then about 1357 in Gerlach de Hohenlohe
  • Anne (1326 † 1361), married to Jean de Wittelsbach (1329 † 1340), duke of Low-Bavaria
  • Elisabeth (1329 † 1402), married in 1350 with Cangrande II della Scala (1332 † 1359), lord of Vérone, then in 1362 with Ulrich of Wurtemberg (1342 † 1388), wire of the count de Wurtemberg
  • Louis VI '' the Romain '' (1330 † 1365), duke of High-Bavaria and margrave de Brandebourg
  • Guillaume (1330 † 1388), duke of Bavaria Straubing, count de Hainaut, of Holland and Zealand
  • Albert Ier (1336 † 1404), duke of Bavaria Straubing, count de Hainaut, of Holland and Zealand
  • Otton V of Bavaria (1341 † 1379), duke of High-Bavaria and margrave de Brandebourg
  • Beatrice (1344 † 1359), married to Erik XII (1339 † 1359), king de Suède
  • Agnes (1345 † 1352)
  • Louis (1347 † 1348)

His/her older brother Guillaume II died in 1345 without posterity. It named governors for the counties which it inherited, and decided to occupy of it only in 1347, with died of his/her husband. But his/her son opposed and was combined to the Dutchmen it to counter it. In spite of the intervention of English, it had to yield Holland to her son in 1351. She died five years later.
