Marguerite II of Denmark
Marguerite II , queen of Denmark since 1972, born the April 16th 1940, is more usually named Margrethe II , including in the French-speaking countries, is current Souveraine Denmark.
Biography
It is the oldest daughter of the king Frederic IX of Denmark (1899-1972) and his wife the princess Ingrid of Sweden (1910-2000).
It goes down by her father from kings de Danemark and by his mother from the Swedish sovereigns. His/her maternal grandfather was the king of Sweden Gustave VI Adolphe and his/her maternal grandmother Margaret of Great Britain was the grand-daughter of the queen Victoria. For this reason, it is related with the majority of the members of the royal houses of Europe.
She marries in 1967 the French Henri de Laborde de Montpezat (1934-), to which she gives two wire: the crown prince Frederik (1968-) - future Frederic X - and the prince Joachim (1969).
In 1970, it draws traditional the labels of Christmas. The sheet of 50 labels represents a populated castle of angels to the gilded wings. Although not making it possible to frank the letters, these labels help to finance a Danish association of assistance to the ill children, and are a popular tradition in certain Scandinavian countries.
In 1985, it drew also the postage stamp which commemorated the 40ème birthday of the release of Denmark.
The queen Marguerite II is intellectual. She maintains a long correspondence with the writer J.R.R. Tolkien, of which she illustrates the first edition of the Seigneur of the Rings , under the pseudonym Ingahild Grathmer. With her husband, it translates, in 1981, the work of Simone de Beauvoir All the men are mortals .
It succeeds her father on January 14th, 1972, with the detriment of the brother of this last, his uncle prince Knud of Denmark (1900-1976). Indeed, Frederic IX, having only girls, made modify the constitution in 1953, in order to make that his/her oldest daughter can go up on the throne. The decision is ratified by referendum the May 28th 1953 by 1.181.173 votes against 318.075, that is to say 78%.
On the military level, the queen Marghrete II is commander-in-chief of the Danish army. In the British army, it is colonel on a purely honorary basis of the Regiment of the Queen and the Royal Regiment of the Princess of Wales.
The Marghrete queen is very popular in Denmark. Among the European sovereigns, it is the only one to regularly give public sittings to Danes who wish to speak to him or to expose a problem to him. Only criticism in its connection is to smoke in public. One makes fun also nicely of his original vestimentary choices.
Since 1970, the Queen devotes to many artistic activities, like painting, the creation of fabrics intended for the Danish churches, the watercolour, the drawing, scenography or the embroidery. The public could admire part of its production during exposures to Denmark and abroad.
Its family and descent
The queen Marguerite II and prince Henrik have two wire (Frederik and Joachim), three grandsons (Nicolai, Felix and Christian) and a little girl (Isabella).
Their son junior the prince Joachim married in 1995 Alexandra Manley, brilliant and elegant British citizen of ascent Chinese and originating in HongKong. They had two children: prince Nicolai (born in 1999) and prince Felix (born in 2002). They separate in 2004 and divorce in 2005. Considering her very great popularity and her engagement with the service of Denmark, the Alexandra princess was titrated Comtesse of Frederiksborg by the queen Marguerite II, continuous of living in Copenhagen and is invited to certain official receptions.
In 2004 the crown prince Frederik wife Australian, Mary Donaldson, become the Mary princess of Denmark, which it met with the Olympic Games of Sydney in 2000. October 15th, 2005, the princess gives rise to a boy, prince Christian, heir as a second to the crown, behind her father and has a girl on April 21st, 2007, fore-mentioned Isabella.
The youngest sister of Marguerite II, the princess Anne-Marie of Denmark becomes queen of the Hellènes by marrying in 1964 the king Constantin II (1940-). But following the introduction of the republic, they must live in exile and settle in London.
His/her other sister, the princess Benedikte of Denmark is married with prince Richard de Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, but it returns regularly to Denmark for official engagements.
