Marguerite II of Denmark

Marguerite II , queen of Denmark since 1972, born the April 16th 1940, is more usually named Margrethe II , including in the French-speaking countries, is current Souveraine Denmark.

Biography

It is the oldest daughter of the king Frederic IX of Denmark (1899-1972) and his wife the princess Ingrid of Sweden (1910-2000).

It goes down by her father from kings de Danemark and by his mother from the Swedish sovereigns. His/her maternal grandfather was the king of Sweden Gustave VI Adolphe and his/her maternal grandmother Margaret of Great Britain was the grand-daughter of the queen Victoria. In 1970, it draws traditional the labels of Christmas. The sheet of 50 labels represents a populated castle of angels to the gilded wings. Although not making it possible to frank the letters, these labels help to finance a Danish association of assistance to the ill children, and are a popular tradition in certain Scandinavian countries.

In 1985, it drew also the postage stamp which commemorated the 40ème birthday of the release of Denmark.

The queen Marguerite II is intellectual. She maintains a long correspondence with the writer J.R.R. Tolkien, of which she illustrates the first edition of the Seigneur of the Rings , under the pseudonym Ingahild Grathmer. It succeeds her father on January 14th, 1972, with the detriment of the brother of this last, his uncle prince Knud of Denmark (1900-1976). The Marghrete queen is very popular in Denmark. Among the European sovereigns, it is the only one to regularly give public sittings to Danes who wish to speak to him or to expose a problem to him.
