Marguerite Durand (feminist)

Marguerite Durand (January 24th 1864 - March 16th 1936), founder of the newspaper the Sling , is a journalist and French Féministe.

After having obtained a first price of comedy to the academy, it enters to the French Comédie in 1881 when it specializes in roles of ingenuous. In 1888, it leaves the scene and marries Georges Laguerre, lawyer and appointed Boulangiste. Thanks to him, she attends the political circles and journalistic time and is initiated with journalism by publishing its first articles in the Press , newspaper which Laguerre directed.

Following its divorce in 1891, it enters to the Figaro and creates the heading “Mail”. In 1896, the newspaper sends it to the international feminist Congress which is held with the hotel of the Learned societies. This congress will upset its life because it henceforth decides to be devoted to the defense of the women's rights.

The following year, it founds the Sling , located 14 rue Saint-Georges; the first number appears on December 9th, 1897. Direction with the drafting while passing by the typography, it is a newspaper exclusively elaborate by women. The articles speak not only about the women but also about any subject related to the topicality: policy, literature, sport, finance, etc to cover certain events, the journalists must obtain special permits sometimes besides; indeed, certain places such as the Parliament or the Bourse de Paris are at that time prohibited to the women.

This newspaper, called “ Time in underskirt” and which, according to the words of Durand, was “like the other newspapers… not more amusing”, supported the methods of the report (direct observation and testimony of the event). It was a daily newspaper until 1903 then it became monthly until 1905. Many feathers collaborated in it such as Severine, Marcelle Tinayre, Lucie Delarue-Mardrus or Clémence Royer.

After the Sling , Marguerite Durand founds two other newspapers, the Action in 1905 and the News in 1909. In 1910, it is presented to the legislative elections in the 9th district but its candidature is rejected by the prefect of the Seine. It again tries an entry in policy while being presented to the municipal elections of 1927 with the party republican-Socialist

In 1931, it bequeaths all the documentation which it had on the history of the women at the town of Paris, thus creating the first “Office of feminist documentation” French; it will voluntarily direct it until its death in 1936. Located initially in the 5th district, the library Marguerite Durand since 1989 is located in the 13th district.

Marguerite Durand also founded the animalist cemetery of Asnières in 1899 with Georges Harmois.
