Margraviat de Brandebourg

The margraviat of Brandebourg is an old State of the Germanic Roman Holy roman Empire.

It draws its name from the city of the same name. Its limits varied, but they remained about the same ones since 1455. One consequently divided the country into two great parts:

  • the electoral Walk of Brandebourg, subdivided in its turn in:
  • the News-Walk of Brandebourg, divided into:
    • Custrin
    • pitch Circles (Soldin, Kcenigsberg, Landsberg)
    • built-in Circles (Stensberg, Zullichau, Cottbus)

History

This country, initially occupied by the Suèves, and since the 5th century by the Wilges, was subjected by Charlemagne into 789, but it was it only temporarily. Henri the Bird-catcher again subjected them into 928, founded the Marche of North or Goes from Saxony septentrional, known as also Marche of Soltwedel, the city where the first margraves resided, and which took the name of Walk of Stage (1056-1130), when Udon, first count de Stade had begun the second dynasty margraviale.

This one was replaced by the house ascanienne, whose Albert the Bear was the first margrave, 1143, and who finishes in 1320 in the person of Henri the Young person. As of the time of Albert the Bear, the margraviat had become independent of the Duché of Saxony and immediate stronghold of the Empire. In 1247, the margrave was number of the princes remained voter S. In 1259 the house was divided into two lines, and the country in two shares, but the meeting took place in 1304. From 1320 to 1415, Brandebourg passed in two new houses, that of Bavaria and that of Luxembourg. The latter sold it in 1415 with the burgrave Nuremberg, Frederic, line junior by the house of Hohenzollern (born in 1372, died in 1440), whose descendants preserved it so far.

The electorate did not contain whereas Old woman-Walk, Average-Walk, Priegnitz and part of Walk del' Ucker.

Frederic II, known as Iron Tooth, acquired News-Walk in 1445. Jean-Sigismond joins together in 1618 the Eastern Prussia by its marriage with the girl of Albert, duke of Prussia, and took itself this last title.

In 1701, the electorate was set up in kingdom and Frederic III took the title of king de Prusse, under the name of Frederic I: to see Prussia
