Marghera

Marghera which is also known like Venice Marghera or Venice Oporto Marghera , is a fraction (hamlet) commune of Venice, with the entry of the Lagune of Venice in Italy.

Etymology of the name

Marghera finds its origins history in the zone known as of the " Botenicus ", i.e., in the territory conceded by imperial decree with the family of Bottenigo, which were illustrated in the various Roman campaigns. The current name derives from the Venetian dialect “ mar-ghe-managed ” or in Italian “ it will era it pond ” (it was the sea); what rises from the transformation ambiantale of the Lais (Italian barene) formed by the alluvia of the river Brenta before its diversion.

History of the port

At the end of the 19th century, Venice is unable to become an industrial center and a port of the level of those of the Mediterranean. In 1907 a law on the ports is emitted which, in 1917, allowed the expropriation of a quarter of the territory of Mestre the profit of the “ Société of the industrial Port of Venice ” which led the creation of Port Marghera (known as also Port of Mestre) with objective triple:
  • to build a commercial port,
  • to build an industrial port,
  • to build a new “dry land” district which makes it possible to limit the overpopulation of the center lagunaire.

The establishment becomes operational in the years 1920-30 and joined its maximum expansion in the years 1960, as well from the point of view of the productive activity as of the demographic development; by attracting many inhabitants of the center and common neighbors.

During the second world war, the port becomes an objective for the American bombardments which blocked the activities and reducing industries in a debris cluster. Nevertheless, the production included in the years 1950 and Marghera started to become one of the industrial poles most known of the country. One of the first productions was the nitrogenized components , precursors of the production of the Fertilisant S for the company “ Agrimont ” then “ Enichem Agricoltura ”. This development will cause the birth of new centers inhabited, like Catene (6000 inhabitants).

the channel of the tankers

The few 400 ships which, each year, transport more than 10 million oil-bearing tons of products obliged the digging of a driving channel of the sea, by the mouth of the port of Malamocco to Marghera and Mestre. The embankment, poured on old the close Alluviums, with license to create two artificial islands.

Marghera today

Known in the past like the great industrial center and one of the most important chemical poles European; these last years, Marghera is in phase of transformation as well at the industrial level as urban.

The industrial park turns to the future with an optics of more respectful development of environment, while safeguarding employment. The urban district evolves/moves in its state of district dormitory of Venice and Mestre with the objective to become a “ quoted garden ”.

Marghéra counts today some 30.000 inhabitants and is divided into several districts, between which Catene (6000 hab), That urban Emiliani historical center of reality, That Sabbioni for the jurisdictions ratione loci and Malcontenta.

Ecology

The port of Marghera is, from the ecological point of view, the black spot of the lagoon by presenting an important potential of position risks and a permanent danger to the population (presence of hydro-fuels and chemicals). The port activity and industrial was always a brake with the various projects of safeguard of the lagoon, like with the last project (Projet Mose) under development.
