Marek Belka

Marek Belka was the president of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Poland of the May 2nd 2004 with the October 19th 2005.

Former member of the Alliance of the democratic left (SLD), it directs a minority government, part of the deputies of which Marek Borowski, former President of the Diet (Sejm), having left the SLD to found a new democratic party (PD). Facing increasing difficulties and having left the SLD to form new a Democratic party, it gave its resignation the May 6th 2005 but this one was refused by the President of the Republic, Aleksander Kwaśniewski so that it directs the government until the next elections envisaged one Sunday between the September 25th and the October 16th 2005.

Biography

Born the January 9th 1952 with Łódź, Mr. Belka is a specialist in the economy. Holder of the mastère of economy of the faculty of Economy and Sociology of the University of Łódź, Marek Belka, which obtained in 1978 a science doctorate economic, is professor of economic scenes since 1994.

Of 1993 with 1997, he was director of the Institute of the economic scenes of the Academy of Science of Poland. Of 1990 with 1996, consulting with the the World Bank, it exerted the functions to advise with the ministry for finances, that of privatizations and to the central office of planning.

Near to President Aleksander Kwaśniewski, he was his adviser with the economic affairs of 1996 with 1997 before becoming Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance of February 1997 at October 1997 within the government of Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz. Again to advise of the President of November 1997 in October 2001, it found its functions of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance of October 2001 at July 2002 in the government of Leszek Miller. From June to October 2003, it directed the Conseil of the coalition for international coordination to Iraq before becoming, in November 2003, director in charge of the economic policy within the provisional Autorité of the coalition in Iraq.

It is a former member of the Trilateral Commission.
