Marcus Stephen
Marcus Stephen (born on October 1st, 1969) was a professional haltérophile and is member of the Parlement of the Republic of Nauru in the Pacifique.
Biography
Sporting career
At its beginnings, Marcus Stephen plays Australian Football for the local team of the Aces but it chooses to continue its career in the Haltérophilie. In 1989, the Nauru Weightlifting Federation (NWF) (nauruane Federation of haltérophilie) is founded to allow Stephen, then only haltérophile country, to take part in international competitions.In 1992, it is selected for the first time at Olympic Games, those of Barcelona. The Olympic National committee nauruan not being at that time yet member of the International Olympic committee, it obtains nationality Samoa and does not contribute under the colors of this other nation Oceania. In 1993, the Olympic committee is founded what makes it possible to the sportsman nauruan to represent his country with the Olympic Games of summer of 1996 with Atlanta and with those of 2000 with Sydney.
When the Olympic flame is brought from Atlanta to Sydney, Stephen has then the honor to carry it at the time of its passage to Nauru.
It is within the framework of the Jeux of the Commonwealth that it obtains its best results. With the general surprise, it obtains a gold medal in the 60  category; kg with the competition of 1990 then in that of 59 kg in 1994. In 1998, it obtains this time three gold medals in the 62  category; kg and it is in this same category as at the time of its last plays in 2002 with Manchester, it obtained three money medals.
Its greater success remains one second place with the championships of the world of Athens in 1998 in the 62  category; kg of the shoulder-jeté.
Political career
Since 1997, it occupies the function of treasurer of the Olympic committee of Nauru. May 3rd, 2003, Stephen is elected as a member of the Parliament nauruan with a score of a little more than 215 points, thus obtaining the first place in the district of Ewa (district of Anetan).During the presidency of Rene Harris, Stephen with the double cassette of Minister for Education and Minister for Finance of August 8th, 2003 until June 22nd, 2004, stations which it had to leave when Ludwig Scotty reaches the presidency. In October 2004, he is re-elected at the Parliament. After the admission of Nauru like member of the Commission international whale-boat on June 15th, 2005, Stephen is selected like representative his country and takes part in the congress having taken place with Ulsan (South Korea).
