Marcus Popillius Laenas (consul in -139)
Marcus Popillius Laenas wire of Marcus Popillius Laenas, (consul in 173 before j-c). The beginning of its career is little known: in 154 before j-c, it was one of deputy near the Ligurians, to examine the reproaches of Massaliotes. In 146 before j-c, it belonged to the delegation at Corinthe, until the sending of Lucius Mummius which take and destroys Corinthe. In 139 before j-c, it is Consul and received like province Hispania citerior. Its predecessor in the command, Quintus Pompeius, had concluded a treaty with the inhabitants from Numance which led on a capitulation unconditional, which it however had been hidden in Numantiens. When, it required the delivery of the weapons, they refused and have to send a delegation to Rome. After the senate had decided to continue the war, he undertook an attack against the walls of Numantiens, but he underwent losses. He reinforces the army of Quintus Servilius Caepio, in Lusitanie. in 137 before j-c, it was replaced by Gaius Hostilius Mancinus. Afterwards, that, nothing are known of him.
