Marcus Oliphant

Sir Marcus “Mark” Laurence Elwin Oliphant , (AC) (Companion of the Order of Australia) (October 8th, 1901 — July 14th, 2000) was a humane Physicien and Australia N, which played a fundamental role in the development of the atomic bomb.

Youths

Oliphant is born the elder one from three wire in Kent Town, a suburb of Adélaïde, South Australia. After having been pilot in its childhood of the demolition of pigs, he becomes vegetarian with life. He is found also entirely deaf of an ear, and carries glasses for severe astigmatism and myopia.

He aims initially a career in Médecine or dentistry, and begins his studies at the university of Adelaide in 1919. But its Physical professor of , Dr. Roy Burdon, persuades it to become physicist by showing him “  the extraordinary grisery which one finds in even minor discoveries in the field of the physique  ”.

The Cavendish laboratory

In 1925, it assists with a talk of the New Zealand physicist Ernest Rutherford and decides at once that it will work for him – an ambition which it will fill by finding a place in 1927 with the Laboratoire Cavendish with the Université of Cambridge, laboratory which at the time fact the research most advanced in the world in Nuclear physics. It is in Cavendish, for example, in 1932, that the atomic nucleus undergoes a fission for the first time in laboratory. Among other research, Oliphant works on the artificial disintegration of the Atomic nucleus and the Ion S positive, and built particle accelerator complex.

The contribution of Oliphant to this work is its discovery of the Hélium 3 and the Tritium. It is also the first to discover that the cores of the heavy Isotope S of hydrogen can have to react together. This reaction of fusion is the base of the Bombe H. Ten years after, the American physicist Edward Teller will insist to use the discovery of Oliphant to build one of them. But Oliphant did not have it prévu : … we did not have the least idea than this could be applied one day to make bombs H. Our curiosity was simply of curiosity in connection with the structure of the atomic nucleus, and the discovery of these reactions was a sheer coincidence, to take again an American expression, has just made create, the June 28th 1941 the Bureau of scientific research for defense (OSRD), larger and more powerful, with in particular the possibility of launching great operations of industrial design, in addition to research. The Advisory committee for uranium becomes the S-1 operation of the OSRD, and in December 1941, after the attack of Pearl Harbor, the District of engineering of Manhattan is launched under the name of “  Manhattan&thinsp project; ”.

In November 1943, Oliphant will work on the Manhattan project, within the British delegation. It is constrained to work on the bomb, and prefers to concentrate on the processes of enrichment of Uranium 235 with Berkeley with his/her friend Ernest Lawrence, a part vital, but less openly military of the project. It receives in 1943 the Médaille Hughes.

It returns to England in April 1945 and takes again after the victory its post of professor of physics at the university of Birmingham. It is there that he learns the use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. He will notice later that he felt “  to some extent to trust that bombe went, but absolutely terrified by what it had done with beings humains.  ” It becomes hard critical nuclear weapons, and member of the Mouvement Pugwash (see the external bonds). “  … As of the beginning, I had terrible concern about the existence of the nuclear weapons, and I took completely party against their usage.  ” lately created, where it launches the study and the construction of the homopolar generator largest of the world (500MJ). This machine will be used to feed large the electric Railgun Canon used like scientific instrument. It establishes the Academy of Science of Australia in 1954, and will be the first president until 1956. After its retirement of the university in 1967, Oliphant is invited to become governor of the state of South Australia, and occupies this station of 1971 to 1976. During its mandate of governor, it is implied in the dissolution of the Whitlam government, and is made large concern with the Prime Minister Don Dunstan, by supporting the actions of the Kerr general governor. The day of dissolution, it is put in a single situation, because the mandates for the election of senators must be deposited by the governors of the States. According to the federal Constitution, these mandates must be given in the 10 days of dissolution, but a law of South Australia on the election of the senators requires a proclamation in advance the 9 days. Unexpected dissolution with 16:45 on November 11th at 1975 requires that it make an immediate proclamation. It is this proclamation which indicates to Australian the date elections.

It is anobli in 1959 and high Compagnon of the Ordre of Australia (AC) in 1977.

Later in its life, it is pilot death in the sufferings of his Rosa wife in 1987, and becomes a supportor of the voluntary Euthanasie.

He dies with Canberra on July 14th, 2000 at 98 years.

Memories

The places bearing the name of Oliphant Mark include/understand the Oliphant building of the ANU, the Park of Conservation Oliphant Mark, a scientific contest for the colleges of South Australia, the Oliphant wing of the building of physics of the Université of Adelaide, and the building Mark Oliphant of the Park Bedford (South Australia).

The nephew of Sir Mark, are a caricaturist of reputation, prize winner of the Prix Pulitzer (1967).
