Marcoussis
Marcoussis is a common French, located in the department of the the Essonne and the area Île-de-France.
The inhabitants are officially called the Marcoussissiens but according to other sources they would be called the Marcoussiens .
Market-gardening village until in the Years 1960, Marcoussis fed the Halles of Paris in Tomate S and strawberry s.
A small train on road, the Arpajonnais, took along the food products as of 4 hours of the morning. Inaugurated in 1894, it ceased functioning in 1936.
Geography
Marcoussis is located at the south of Paris, between RN20, in the east the Autoroute A10 with the west and RN104 called the Francilienne in the south. It is crossed by the RN446, and a small river tributary of the Orge, called Sallemouille (previously called Gadanine).Volunteers create geographical data freely usable and modifiable within the project OpenStreetMap. History
Very old traces of occupation exist, in particular by a polishing machine found on the southern slope of the valley. The village will really start to develop around the priory of Wandrille Saint, depend on the Norman abbey of the same name. In 854, a charter of Charles the Bald person mentions a good in Marcoussis. Initially, it would be only about one vine depending on Bution, near to Arpajon. The monks losing Bution settle in Marcoussis at the beginning of XIIe century.
The absence of files prevents an exact description of what was the priory at the time. It is known only that in 1298, it remains only one monk and that the village counts 120 inhabitants. Célestins arrived at the beginning of XVe century will absorb the possessions of the old ruined priory.
But the history of Marcoussis also passes by the constructions wanted by Jean de Montagu in 1404 - 1408. Minister of Finance of Charles VI, it made build his castle (of which it does not remain that the base and a tower, known as of the Oubliettes), the convent of Célestins (remain of the cellars and a portion of the gate) and it made rebuild the church of the village. This one shelters a superb marble virgin offered by Jean de Berry to the convent of Célestins.
The kings came to drive out in Marcoussis and there remains the royal house built under Louis XV.
There existed a commandery about the hospital ones of Jean saint of Jerusalem to XIIIe century (Brother Baudoyn commander of the " meson of the déluge" in 1290); a vault is still visible (private field).
On the plate close to Nozay, an important establishment of Alcatel shelters research laboratories.
Since 2002, the field of Bellejame in the east of the commune, with the abandonment since decades saw to be established CNR, National center of Rugby of Linas-Marcoussis where the XV of France are involved.
The July 29th 2007, for the first time, was town of departure of the 20th stage of the Tour de France 2007.
Personalities related to the commune
- Catherine Henriette de Balzac d' Entragues, was the girl of the lord of Marcoussis, François de Balzac d' Entragues, it was the mistress of Henri IV, which had promised the marriage to him.
- Jean-Jacques Rousseau which spent a few days to Marcoussis in 1750-1751 about which he speaks in the Confessions
- Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot made several stays in Marcoussis in his friend Dumax painter. From these country moments, it bequeathed us several tables whose Souvenir Marcoussis , also called the cart , chief of work of the Musée of Orsay
- Victor Adolphe Malta-Brown, celebrates geographer, dead in his property in Marcoussis, the street which bears its name today.
- Louis Marcoussis, painter of Polish origin francized his name Markus in Marcoussis on the councils of its friend, Guillaume Apollinaire.

- the festival of the strawberry continues although the culture of the strawberry, disappeared since the beginning from the Années 1980, whereas it was formerly produced locally in great quantity.
The carnival of Bineau
Each year in spring, the carnival of Bineau animates the streets of the village. This carnival, according to certain sources, is dedicated to the minister Jean-Martial Bineau (1805-1855) who under Napoleon III, took unpopular measures by decreasing the output of a revenue of État.It takes place in the following cities:
Arpajon, Leuville-on-Barley, Nozay, City-of-Wood…
In Marcoussis, not of official procession of tanks and majorettes, but a true popular holiday on the initiative of the citizens.
A covered of black pants and a Tail coat, capped puppet of a hat Top hat, and girds of a tri-colored scarf is carried by the young people being 18 years old in the year (formerly conscripts, nowadays boys and girls) vêtus of the same costume. They are followed by the dressed up tanks and inhabitants. For certain groups preparation of " Bineau " last several months (choice of the topic, costumes and construction of the tank which will be the come day drawn by a tractor). Since ten years several groups are mobilized and competed of ingeniousness to make this festival a success. The procession starts towards 15:00, crosses the city by the main street of is in west to finish on the place of the Republic, at the fallen night. Along the way, several halts take place among inhabitants who liberally offer to drink with the carnavaleux one. Bineau is placed at the top of a large heap of straw, which was piled up by the conscripts the previous days, to which one puts fire. Crowd forms a large farandole around fire, until the extinction of this one. The municipality makes safe the way with the closing of the main street of 15:00 has 19:00, the mobilization of the firemen to light and supervise the feu.
It is one of the great moments of the life of the commune, where the joy and good mood reign as Masters, and which many Marcoussisiens would not miss under any pretext.
