Marcos Kyprianou

Marcos Kyprianou , or Markos Kyprianou , born the January 22nd 1960, is a Politician Cypriot Greek.

Biography

Marcos Kyprianou is the January 22nd 1960 with Limassol.

Graduate lawyer of the University of Athens, it follows studies of international law and revenue duty to the Trinity College of Cambridge to the the United Kingdom, then it continues its formation at the School of right of Harvard to the the United States of America in company law and taxation.

Of 1985 with 2003, it worked in Cypriot law firms.

Political career

It started by being devoted to the local political life, while becoming city council man of Nicosie and member of the direction of the Democratic party, then appointed.

  • 1986 - 1991: city council man of Nicosie

  • 1991 - 2003: deputy of the district of Nicosie
    • 1999 - 2003: chair parliamentary commission of the financial and budgetary businesses

Ministerial career

He was Minister for Finance of March 1st 2003 with the April 30th 2004.

European career

To the accession of Cyprus to the European Union on May 1st 2004, it enters the European commission (Commission Prodi), then in the Commission Barroso where it is in charge with the health and the consumer protection. In November 2006, it took a position very discussed in favor of great groups of the food sector by congratulating them for their engagement in favor of the fight against obesity, in particular on the principle of self-regulation. This statement made at the time of a press conference at the European commission, in the presence of the leaders of the aforesaid groups, has what to question the European citizens on the independence of its representatives.

Its mandate expires in 2009.
