The Marcomans (Latin Mr. marcomani ) are a Germanic Peuple Western, known in particular thanks to the Roman historian Tacite which locates them between Nariste S and Quades, in current the Moravie.

At the beginning of the first century of the Christian era, the latter create a transitory kingdom “centered on Bohemia which had just been removed with the Celts Boïens of (9 av. - 19 a. J. - C.). ”; their larger king, Marobod had been hostage with Rome during his youth.

It is also about this time that is born the Germanic alphabet runic, or Futhark , whose Marcomans are perhaps the authors.

In IIe century of the Christian era, Marcomans, established on the low-Danube, make weigh, with the Quades, a constant threat on the Danubian Limes (the border of the Roman Empire), probably under the pressure of the Goths and the Gépides. In 166 - 167, Marcomans are combined with the Lombards and try to enter to cross the Danube in Pannonia (current Hungary) They carry out several incursions on the imperial territory, until in 180: in 169, they are overcome with Quades by the Emperor Marc-Aurèle and subjected during a time, but revolt again.

At the end of IVe century, Marcomans face a new threat with the arrival of the Huns: in the wake of the latter, they leave their grounds and move towards the Gaulle. Subjugated by the Suèves, the Marcomans last form part of the army which founds the Royaume suève localized in Galicia current.
