Marcilhac-on-That

Marcilhac-on-That is a common French, located in the department of the Lot and the area the Midday-Pyrenees.

Geography

This house, located in the enclosure of the Abbey, would date from XVIe century. It was used for the reception of the pèlerins.
It is the seat today the Tourist office of the Country of Figeac-Cajarc and the Association of the Friends of the Abbey. One can discover there a museum of sacred art which gathers the most remarkable furniture of the Abbey.

The origin of the name of this open sky cistern, visible with the limit of the commune of Saint-Chels, is dubious. This dry stone construction, presents an interior staircase making it possible to go down there to draw there water, whatever its level. The causses limestones do not present brooks, water infiltrating immediately, from where the interest of such constructions.
The legend wants that this well was to feed out of water a Gallo-Roman villa built on a culminating point, by one named “Marcellus”, thus giving its name to the village.
  • the cazelles ones.

The commune of Marcilnac is famous for the number of cazelles which one finds on his plate, in the neighborhoods of 400. These dry stone constructions, carried out by the shepherds between XVIIIe and the XIXe centuries, could be used to them as shelter. They can be square, round, with a stage, a chimney…
A procedure of protection of this inheritance is in hand with the General advice of Lot.
One will notice on the plates the presence of the dry stone walls and the “cayrous” (removed stone accumulation of the fields) typical of the causses limestones.

It opens by a gantry from 2 to 3 m and is composed of three big rooms to coral concretions red and white, with qualified very fine stalactites macaronis.

One can observe the presence of many dolmens. They testify to the prehistoric human activity towards thousand-year-old IIIe before J. - C.
