Marcii
Marcius , sometimes written Martius , was the nomen of a former family initially plebeian patrician then Roman, the people Marcia . It belonged to the hundred gentes at the origins of Rome and its name comes the Sabine divinity with the name Osque Mavors or Mamers , later comparable with Mars.
This people of origin Sabine affirmed to go down from the fourth king de Rome, Ancus Marcius. People made strike the effigy of Numa Pompilius and of Ancus Marcius on its currency and one of the families of people carried even the nomen Rex (in Latin: king ). In spite of this supposed antiquity however, one finds no patrician bearing this name in the first times of the republic, except for Coriolan. It is only after the promulgation of the laws liciniennes that one finds members of this family reaching the consular load, the first being Caius Marcius Rutilus Censorinus, consul in -357.
The only branch patrician of the family bore the name of Coriolanus . The plebeian branches, at the time of the republic, had as a name Censorinus , Crispus , Figulus , Libo , Philippus , Ralla , Rex , Rufus , Rutilus , Septimus , Sermo and Tremulus . A Marcius soothsayer would be at the origin of the Ludi Apollinares ( plays apollinaires ) in -212 and it is also with one of the members of this family, Quintus Marcius Rex that Rome owes the construction of the famous aqueduct Aqua Marcia.
