Marcigny is a common French, located in the department of Saône-et-Loire and the area Burgundy.

Geography

In the south of the Burgundy, in edge of the Loire, Marcigny belongs to the Brionnais.

History

Marcigny belonged to the barons of Semur.

In 1054, Holy Hugues, wire of Dalmace Ier de Semur and become Abbot of Cluny, founded in Marcigny the first priory of Bénédictines dependant on Cluny .

The convent of Marcigny accepted members of big families of Europe, in particular Adèle of Blois, girl of William the Conqueror, which died there in 1137.

The market, taking place Monday, goes back to 1266.

the Tower of the Mill

High (13 m under roof, 12 m of arrow), and in a remarkable state of conservation, it 25 m was built between 1410 and 1420, on order of Jean Without Peur, duke of Burgundy, to defend its duchy against the Armagnacs. The thickness of the wall is of 2,80 m at the base and still of 1,20 m at the top; as for the frontage, it is decorated of more than 200 gibbosities (covered, balls), which one is unaware of the significance. It shelters an important municipal museum in which are preserved, inter alia, of many vestiges of the priory: capitals, columns. One can find there a statue of the Cardinal of Richelieu thus celebrating his passage in the city.
