Marchioness of Merteuil

The marchioness of Merteuil , one of the main characters of the epistolary Romance the dangerous Connections of Choderlos de Laclos, is a libertine in the heart. Its letters addressed to the Vicomte of Valmont expose to the reader the rules of libertinage in the French nobility of the end of the 18th century and state the instructions given to the Viscount in order to appease a personal revenge towards the Count de Gercourt.

Very intelligent character, young widow and old amante of Valmont, it will handle it, like Mrs. de Volanges and his Cécile daughter, whose marchioness becomes the confidante, in order to arrive at his ends.

Film adaptations of the novel

In the film the dangerous connections of Roger Vadim, turned in 1959, the marchioness of Merteuil was played by Jeanne Moreau.

The marchioness of Merteuil was incarnated by Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons , an American adaptation going back to 1988 by Stephen Frears on a scenario of Christopher Hampton.

One year afterwards, she was played by Annette Bening in Valmont of Milos Forman.

In the film Sex Intentions , modern adaptation of the dangerous Connections , the role of Merteuil was held by Sarah Michelle Gellar.
