March 1

March 1 is a Soviet Space probe of the Programme Mars and was launched on November 1st, 1962.

Although it does not fulfill its initial mission which was to reach the planet Mars, it revealed the existence of a third belt of radiations around the Ground being to 50000 km of altitude.

Probe

March 1 was a probe of the type Venera modified having the form of a Cylindre 3.3 meters length for one meter in diameter. With its deployed solar panels, the probe made four meters of scale.

The cylinder was divided into two compartments:

  • that of the top of 2.7 meters was the orbital module containing the guidance systems and of propulsion
  • that of the lower part was the module of experiment containing all the scientific instrumentation

The communication was ensured by a parabolic aerial high profit of 1.7 meter as well as an omnidirectional aerial and another semi-directional.

Energy was stored in a Accumulateur cadmium-nickel of 42 [[Ampere-hour ampere-hour]] and came from the two solar panels which offered an entire surface of 2.6 m ².

Mission

August 1st March 21st, 1963, probed it ceased its communications with the Earth apart 106 million kilometers, putting an end to the mission.
