March (Ardeche)
Mars is a common French, located in the department of the Ardèche and the area the Rhone-Alps.
Geography
Located on the edge of Lignon, Mars is bordering with the department on the Haute-Loire and the commune of the Chambon-on-Lignon. Its average altitude is of approximately 1020m. It is part nevertheless of the Plate Vivarais Lignon, this Plate with strong Protestant identity marked by the wars of religion.Primarily agricultural, the commune extends on 1500 hectares of which a part is occupied by the Golf of Chambon. The commune knows some volcanic sites; Montreal; Hugons which is the last headlands of volcanic origin while going towards the East. But the main part of the grounds is granitic. The climate is rigorous and one knows great periods of snowing up during the winter or great colds. winter 2004/2005 was marked by very great snowfalls and “the burle” wind which raises snow assembled snow-drifts of 5m from top in Hugons this year there.
History
On a Roman way, the commune of Mars takes this name only at the beginning of the 20th century, probably because there were then more inhabitants with the locality Mars and that the Protestant practice is of such an importance that a Temple there has just been built. Previously, it named Saint-Roman-the-Desert. The Romance church of Romain Saint the Desert is particularly well located making it possible to see the Alps in the East and the chain of the the Cevennes in the West ending in Mezenc. At the 16th century, the parish of Romain Saint was marked by the wars of religion which destroyed the castle of Montreal like that of the borough of Saint-Agrève in 1575 (commune bordering). A large fair brought together the inhabitants with the locality Mars at the beginning of spring. It does not join together anybody any more today.Tourism is important and 270 second home is counted. A small hotel/restaurant, a camp-site, as of the lodgings proposes lodging. The credits are craftsmen, farmers, loggers, or work with the borough of common the close relations. A helicicultor settled in 2003 and launches out in the production of snails of March.
