Marcelo Caetano

Marcelo Jose das Firns Alves Caetano , born the August 17th 1906 with Lisbon and dead the October 26th 1980 with Rio de Janeiro, was a politician Portuguese and last president of the council of the Estado Novo.

Marcelo Caetano was law professor at the University of Lisbon. Preserving politician, outstanding figure of the Estado Novo, it makes career under the dictatorship of the Prime Minister António de Oliveira Salazar and is named by this last Minister for the colonies.

In 1968, Salazar being falls ill, Marcelo Caetano are named Prime Minister the September 28th by the president Américo Tomás. Its policy involves a certain liberalization of the country, but proves insufficient to rectify the economy and to guarantee public freedoms. Caetano is in addition weakened by the civil wars in the Portuguese colonies, in particular in Angola. Not having the authority, nor the political base of Salazar, Caetano knows a conflict of being able, new of the time of its predecessor, with the president and certain fringes of the mode. Caetano is finally reversed by the Révolution of the eyelets and must escape with the Brésil.
