Marcel Gromaire (Noyelles-on-Sambre, July 24th 1892 - Paris, April 11th 1971), painter.
Biographical elements
Gromaire is formed in the academies of Montparnasse. Its work is serious but not severe. Marked by the War of 1914-1918, it leaves there reinforced in its certainty, influenced by Cézanne it advances with counter-current of the experiments of the Cubisme. This artist can remain in contact with the world but it translates it by violently simplified forms. He says: “With the deformation I oppose the assertion of the object” . Ochers, the brown ones are raised of reds the blue ones which give them an accent whose power is essential.
It is also expressed in the etchings, the Aquarelle and in the art of the Tapisserie.
He marries on February 17th, 1948, with the town hall of the 14th district of Paris the artist-painter Helene Detroyat (1899 - 1951).
Buried with the municipal cemetery of its native village Noyelles-on-Sambre.
One said of him
