Marcel Gotlib

Gotlib or Marcel Gotlib , Marcel Gottlieb of his true name, is a Dessinateur and Scénariste of Cartoon French born the July 14th 1934 with Paris.

Biography

Drawing with the cartoon

It is in its youth large amateur of works of Walt Disney (with a great admiration for the film Pinocchio), inter alia, which will inspire it thereafter. In 1951, whereas he works with the OCP (Pharmaceutical Commercial Office), while following the courses of the evening of the applied arts. It finds then a place of Lettreur at Opera-Mundi, which it leaves to try its chance “on its account”. It carries out many coloring books, tales, books for children. It makes its beginnings in the Cartoon in 1962, in the newspaper Vaillant , where it draws Gilou, Klop, Puck and Poil , Nanar, Jujube and Piette and especially Merry-Lad , whose publication continues in Vaillant , then Pif gadget , until 1971.

Always in the Years 1960, it draws in Record the conferences of “Professor Frederic Rosbif”, whose certain ideas will be taken up then for its character of Professor Burp in the Rubrique with brac . It also illustrates books of tales for children, like Titou does the housework .

Of Pilot to the Echo of savannas

Entered with the newspaper Pilot , it creates there in 1965 with Rene Goscinny the series Dingodossiers . Goscinny, then editor association of the newspaper, appreciates the humor of Gotlib, influenced by the newspaper of satirical data base American Mad . He encourages it after some albums in collaboration to continue only a series: it will be the Rubrique with brac , small revolution in the world of the comic data base.

Later, in 1972, another collaborator of Pilot , friend of Gotlib Nikita Mandryka, sees himself refusing a history of the Concombre Masked by Goscinny. Disappointed, Mandryka then proposes in Gotlib to create their own newspaper. With the assistance of Claire Bretécher, they thus launch in 1972 the Echo of savannas , where the style and the stories of Gotlib enormously will change compared to the years of Pilote .

On the level of the drawing, the feature is done fattier, more worked. It accentuates the details, improves its blows of feather. The adventure Fluid Icy

April 1st, 1975, it launches its own newspaper, Icy Fluide , “magazine of Umour and Bandessinées” . It continues however to draw illustrations, in particular for the republication of its preceding albums or for publicities. In 1991, it obtains the Grand Prix of the Festival of Angouleme.

Style

The style of Gotlib is, with regard to the drawing, particularly stripped, even if its characters are of a great complexity. Thus, one finds on his boards few decorations, except in the Dingodossiers , where Goscinny required some of him. This absence of decorations, obvious from Heading-with-Brac, is at the origin of the ladybird of the Heading-with-brac, which has as a role to fill the holes, to fill the boxes (it had before associated in the same way a mouse with its character Merry-Lad in the series of the same name). The ladybird also plays the part of a kind of " chorus antique" who comes to contradict what is told in the box where itself is.

Moreover, the style of Gotlib is particular on the level of the character S. Indeed, it draws of the square heroes, with the very delimited proportions, which resemble those found in the very realistic Tarzan of Burne Hogarth (Gotlib will say to be strongly influenced by this series). This characteristic contrasts with the matter of the stories of the draftsman, because if the characters are realistic, their positions, expressions and adventures are humorous (it calls that his style réalistico-comique'). Gotlib often puts its characters in postures of funniest: they pass from a box Heading-to-brac the other of a normal position to another, which is burlesque being, worthy of a statue, straight left a play of William Shakespeare. There, there is not really of central figure, even if some return regularly, or appear throughout these very short stories. Gotlib will come from there all the same to create several series dedicated to a particular character with Superdupont, Jovial Hamster, Pervers Pépère, and oldest, Merry-Lad.
