Marcel Cohen

Marcel Cohen (1884 - 1974) is a linguist French. He was professor with the École of the Eastern languages, where he taught the Guèze and the Amharique, and with the practical École of the high studies. Specialist in the Semitic languages, and in particular in the Ethiopian languages, it published monumental a Traité amharic language (1936).

One also owes him of work on French ( Histoire of a language, French , 1950), the sociolinguistique one ( For a sociology of the language , 1956), the writing ( the Great Invention of the writing and its evolution , 1959, republication in Histoire and art of the Writing , Bouquins, Robert Laffont, 2005). It directed with Antoine Meillet a vast collective work entitled the languages of the world (1924 and 1952).
