Marcel Cachin

Gilles, Marcel Cachin (Plourivo, close to Paimpol, September 20th 1869 - Choisy-the-King, February 12th 1958) is a Politician French. He was wire of Marcel, gendarme and of Marie-Louise Gallou, ropemaking machine of flax.

Professional life

Professor of philosophy in Bordeaux during fifteen years. Marcel Cachin was very attached to the Breton “language of the farming community and the Breton proletariat”.

Political life

As of 1891, it adheres to the working Parti French of Jules Guesde. It takes part in the socialist congresses of Amsterdam (1904) and of Paris (1905), this last pronouncing the creation of the SFIO which it joined. He was freemason.

Appointed elected official of 1914 with 1932, it joins the policy of national union during the First World War, and thus supports the war. He is sent on mission in Russia in 1917.

In 1920, at the time of the Congress of Turns, it belongs to the majority approving the Russian Révolution and the Bolchévisme. It adheres then to the IIIe Internationale. In 1936 it will be one of the pillars of the Popular front. Refusing to repudiate the Pacte germano-Soviet it is deposed of its political offices in 1940 and will carry out during the war a clandestine existence. After the Release, it will take again its activities until its death in 1958.

Director of Humanity (1918 - 1958), he was member of the political office of the French Communist party (1923 - 1958) and senator (1935) then appointed of the Seine (1946). After the war it will be Député senior of the National Assembly and this until her death.

At the 88 years age, he is the first foreigner with being decorated with the Ordre of Lénine.

His/her daughter Marcelle Cachin (1911 - 1999) married Paul Hertzog, surgeon. Itself Doctor, it was member of the Communist party and deputy.

  • 1931, candidate for the PCF and obtains 10 votes out of 901 with the first turn (either 1,1% of the votes), then 11 votes out of 893 with the second turn (or 1,23% of the votes).
  • 1932, candidate for the PCF, obtains 8 votes out of 826 (either 0,96% of the votes).
  • 1939, candidate for the PCF, obtains 74 votes out of 916 (either 8,07% of the votes).
  • Presidential of 1953, candidate for the PCF, obtains 113 votes out of 932 (either 12,12% of the votes).
