Withdrawals of case, introduction to an anthropology of the surmodernity , the Threshold, 1992:
Marc Augé continues his anthropology of the daily newspaper by exploring the withdrawals of case, these spaces of anonymity which accommodate each day of the more individuals. The withdrawals of case, they are as well the installations necessary to the accelerated circulation of the people and the goods (fast tracks, exchangers, stations, airport) that means of transport themselves (cars, trains or planes). But also hotel large chains with the interchangeable rooms, supermarkets or, differently, the camps of prolonged transit where the refugees of planet are parked. The withdrawal of case is thus all the opposite of a residence, a residence, a place to the common direction of the term. Only, but similar to the others, the user of the withdrawal of case maintains with this one a contractual relation symbolized by the train ticket, the chart presented to toll… In these withdrawals of case, one conquers his anonymity only by providing the proof of his identity - passport, credit card… The ethnologist notices that one can cross with a crossroads whereas the exchanger prohibits any meeting. If the traveller strolls in way or is mislaid, the passenger who travels by the plane is determined by his destination. Today, the reference marks of the identity and the statute of the history change at the same time as the organization of terrestrial space.
