Marc Ferro

Marc Ferro , born in 1924, is a historian French, specialist in the Russia and the USSR and Histoire of the cinema.

Biography

Marc Ferro takes part during the Occupation in the Résistance in the Maquis of Vercors. After the war, he teaches in Algeria. He specializes starting from the beginning of the year 1960 in the Soviet history (its thesis of doctorate relates to the Russian Révolution of 1917), field in which he tried to carry a nonideological speech. Its studies in the field of the social Histoire slice with the analyzes then dominant of the “school” of the Totalitarisme. It shows that the insurrection of October is not reduced to the Coup d'etat Bolshevik, because she is indissociable movement Révolutionnaire and popular in progress. It also analyzes the process of Bureaucratisation - absolutisation of the capacity starting from the top, but also of the base.

After having taught with the Polytechnic school, he is director of studies to the École of the high studies in social sciences (group of Cinéma research and History), president of Association for research with the EHESS and deputy manager of the '' Annales '', where he is named by Fernand Braudel in 1970. Former director of the Institute of the Soviet world and the Central Europe, he is Doctor honoris causa of the Université of Moscow since 1999.

Marc Ferro initiated the reflection on the cinema and the history. It uses the cinema as instrument of knowledge of the history of the companies, considering that the cinema delivers a testimony as well as traditional sources. It presented on television, initially on the Seven as from 1989, then on Arte as from 1992, a historical emission of visionnage of files with a 50 years shift, named “parallel Histoire”: its starting corresponds the day before the Second world war, with the analysis of cinema news of the various camps, then less old files to be able to compare the times. In 1993, he is Co-scenario writer of the film Pétain of Jean Marbœuf.

In March 2007, it signs with 150 intellectuals a text which invites to vote for Ségolène Royal, “against a line of arrogance”, for “a left of hope”.
