Marc-Michel

Biography

Marc Antoine Amédée Michel , known as Marc-Michel , is a literary man and French writer of vaudevilles, born with Marseilles the July 22nd 1812, died with Paris the March 12th 1868.
It began its studies with Aix-en-Provence in the house from the Jesuits whom the Père Loriquet directed then, and it finished them at his place with the college of Marseilles. Its first literary tests were done under the pseudonym of Scribomane Job by publishing in the Semaphore of poetries mélancoliques.
In 1834, it decided to go to seek glory and fortune with Paris. It started there by publishing poetries in the Revue France , then in the Revue theaters , where it became acquainted with Eugene Labiche and Auguste Lefranc. As from this moment, it completely changed kind and of style. The sad poet left room to the merry writer, full with spirit and comic liveliness. He started to write for the theater, while giving in the general Journal of the courts of the reports of correctional spiritual and amusing. It is probable that this raw material glanée near the courts was going to feed its liveliness bouffonne of vaudevilliste.
In 1838, Lefranc, Marc Michel and Labiche founded the “dramatic company” Paul Dandré, intended for the production of light comedies and dramas. A contract in due form bound the three beginners who committed themselves reserving all their production at the young company. Auguste Lefranc, perhaps extremely of its relationship with Scribe, took the head of this trio and was shown very authoritative. The collective Paul Dandré undoubtedly benefitted from the assistance of Scribe at its beginnings. But at the end of two years, this company was dissolved, and each member took again his freedom, while preserving friendly relations and professionnelles.
Like Labiche, Marc-Michel made appear in 1840 a novel entitled: the Husband of Mrs Gaillardot (3 vol. in-12).
As a writer of vaudevilles, Marc-Michel wrote a hundred parts, either only, or in collaboration with Ancelot, Anicet-Middle-class man, Brisebarre, Chivot, Choler, Delacour, Dugard, Dumanoir, Fontaine, Gonzalès, Eugene Grangé, Jaime, Laurencin, Lefranc, Lockroy wire, Lorin, Maurin, Peupin, Siraudin, Varin, but generally (in half of the cases) with Labiche.
Except for two dramas, all the theatrical work of Marc-Michel consists of light comedies, comedy-light comedies and in pochades which is characterized by the eccentricity bouffonne language and situations. Several of works which he wrote, in particular those with Labiche, had great successes. In particular a leghorn hat is regarded by certain as a masterpiece of the genre.
Its collaboration with Labiche ceased in 1862 with the station Chambaudet. There seem to be two reasons with that. On the one hand Labiche wished since many years to raise the level of its works, and Marc-Michel did not appear to him to be the adequate collaborator for that; in addition the increasingly difficult character of Marc-Michel made painful their working sessions. But the two men will preserve friendly relations until the death of Marc-Michel on March 12th, 1868 at Paris.
