Marbaix
Marbaix is a common French, located in the department of the Northern and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Its inhabitants is called Marbaisiens.
Geography
Marbaix is located in the Natural park of Avesnois, on the RD 962 halfway between Avesnes-on-Helpe and Maroilles.
History
Etymology: one finds Merbasium , Merbasia , Marbaix at the 12th century and Merbatia , Merbaix , Merbais at the 12th century.
Marbaix is one of the four villages (Marbaix, Maroilles, Noyelles-on-Sambre and Taisnières-in-Thiérache) of the ground of Saint-Humbert, soil of AOC of the Maroilles. Marbaix belongs to the Abbaye of Maroilles cheese, which had a firm neighbor of the church. One finds there stones blue strong fames. The exploitation of the careers was formerly the main activity of the inhabitants.
Throughout the roads and the accesses of the small green ways, you will discover houses and primarily made farms of these same blue stones with sometimes the presence of red/orange bricks.
Since 2003, Marbaix is connected to natural gas and since May 2005 to technology ADSL.
Each year, before last Sunday of May, is organized there the Festival of consisting Pierre Bleue of various exhibitors and local craftsmen, open horse-gears, an exposure of old vehicles and a horse show (since the edition 2005).

Marbaix and size of the blue stone
In 1895, creation date of its harmony, Marbaix saw much agriculture and car still some profits of the size of the blue stone. Called still small Granite, this stone was extracted and cut for a long time and especially formed integral part of the life of Marbésiens in the current of the 18th century.
Contrary to the rocteurs who detached from the blocks of the layer for unfavorable wages, the stone masons were paid at piece-rates and could, by working much, to obtain comfortable wages. The stones were put at the biddings between the workmen of the various building sites. These biddings represented a kind of adjudication in which all the workmen without distinction took part. As of the completed work, they started again another of them. This habit caused to put all the workers at equality since the various works to be carried out were accessible to all.
Personalities related to the commune

the general Jacques Fromentin illustrated with the Bataille of Wattignies in 1793. It was named later military governor of Landrecies. Having married a censière of Large-Fayt, Joséphine Lebrun, it settled in the commune where it died in 1830. One can see his tomb stone in the Cimetière. Its house, data at the village, are used as Mairie (renovated together in 2006).
