The islands Marías are a Mexican archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean, to a hundred kilometers of the coasts of the state of the Nayarit. Since 1905, they then lodge a penal settlement, created by Porfirio Díaz president of Mexico and are also classified since 2000 like Natural reserve.
The archipelago is composed of four islands and has as coordinates:
- Veined María , 126.4 km ², the only populated island and most important which lodges a colony pénitentière.
- María Magdalena , 86.6 km ²,
- María Cleofas , 27.3 km ²,
- San Juanito , a small small island of 12.3 km ².
They are named thus in homage to 3 women prénommant Marie in the New Testament of the Bible: The Virgin Mary, Marie-madeleine, and Marie, the woman of Cleophas.
