María Teresa Mestre

María Teresa of Luxembourg (María Teresa Mestre there Batista) , born with Havana (Cuba) the March 22nd 1956, is the large-duchess Luxembourg.

Biography

It leaves its country in October 1959. Its family is established initially with New York, where, starting from 1961, it studies with the Lycée French. In June 1965, his/her parents settle during a few months in their family property with Santander in Spain, then take their final residence with Geneva (Suisse) where it passes successfully the baccalaureat French in June 1975.

She acquires Swiss nationality and makes her studies in political sciences with the Université of Geneva where she is graduate in 1980. There, it meets the large-duke heir to Luxembourg Henri, with which, during 4 years, it follows its studies. They marry the February 14th 1981. It becomes large-duchess heiress then. Its native tongue is the Spanish but she also speaks the French, the English and the Luxembourg .

Since its childhood, it takes courses of Ballet and song. She plays of the Guitare, likes the Musique and the Littérature and is interested in the Peinture. Sporting, it practices the Ski, the Patinage and the water sports .

With her husband, the large-duke Henri, it has 5 children and 2 grandchildren (Gabriel and Noah de Nassau):

Maria-Teresa is ambassador of good will of UNESCO since 1997 and accomplishes frequent voyages to abroad promote the microphone-credit, the education of the women and girls .

The October 7th 2000, the large-duke Jean abdicates in favor of his Henri oldest son. The large-duchess María Teresa becomes thus First lady of Luxembourg.

The large-ducal couple is an active member of the Foundation Mentor, created under the patronage of the World Health Organization to prevent the drug taking by the young people. The large-duchess grants her High patronage to Association Luxembourg Alzheimer and the Association of the Blind men and Malvoyants of Luxembourg. She is also member of honor of the Paralympic International committee.

With her husband, it creates the Foundation Large-duke Henri-Large-duchess María Teresa which pursues four goals: assistance to people in the need residing at Luxembourg and having addressed a request for assistance to the sovereigns; support with integration in the partnership suffering from a handicap; promotion of school structures opened with children and teenagers having problems of training; contribution to development actions and of humanitarian aid abroad.

At the time of the festival national 2002, the large-duchess María Teresa makes imprudence to tell with journalists her frictions with her mother-in-law the large-duchess Joséphine-Charlotte. The two women have a vision completely different from their role. Born from royal blood, the large-duchess Joséphine-Charlotte had the image of a " large dame" a little inaccessible and imposed the respect and the distance with its compatriots. On her side, of Latin temperament, the large-duchess María Teresa has a great direction of the contact, gives frequent interviews (including on personal subjects) and médiatisé the large-ducal family.

Following the death of the large-duchess Joséphine-Charlotte in January 2005 , María Teresa takes again its activities: presidency of the the Luxembourg Red Cross and the Luxembourg Foundation against Cancer; High patronage with S.O.S Villages of Child-Luxembourg and with Artistic circle of Luxembourg ; presidency of honor of the Philharmonic orchestra of Luxembourg .

The large-duchess María Teresa of Luxembourg east doctor honoris causa of the Seton Hall University in the New Jersey since 1999 and of the University of Leon to the Nicaragua since 2003 . She saw herself decreed on June 13rd, 2006 with New York the Path to Peace Award 2006 .

From the January 1st, 2007, the large-duchess María Teresa ensures the High patronage of UNICEF-Luxembourg. She was named, in April 2007, " Eminent lawyer of the enfants" by the UNICEF in Geneva and announced that it was going to be devoted in particular to the orphans of the AIDS and the child-soldiers.
