María Colón

María Caridad Colón Rueñes , born on March 25th, 1958 with Baracoa, is a innate athlete Cuba. It was the first Cuban one to become Olympic champion.

To the Olympic Games of summer of 1980 with Moscow, the Est-Allemande Ute Richter had launched the javelin, at the time of the qualifications, to 66.66 m, establishing a new Olympic record. María Colón was qualified for the final only in eighth position with a throw with 64.42 Mr. But finally, María Colón launched, with its first test, to 68.40 m, new Olympic record and gained in front of the Soviet Saida Gunba and East-German the Ute Hommola and Ute Richter.

In 1983, it successfully defended its title obtained four years earlier with the Pan-American Jeux, but finished only eighth of the first championships of the world.
