PPPoE (in English Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet ) is a protocol of encapsulation of PPP on Ethernet, developped at the point at the origin by the company RedBack and described by the RFC 2516.
It makes it possible to profit from the advantages of PPP, such safety (coding) and connection (flow, etc) controls it, on a network 802.3.
It is employed much by connections high banc to Internet by ADSL and cable intended for the private individuals, although a connection using a bridge Ethernet-Ethernet is often more stable and more powerful.
It also poses problems of MTU: PPPoE occupies 8 Octet S in the screen S Ethernet, lowering in fact the maximum size of the Paquet S IP of 1500 bytes to 1492 bytes.
An alternative to PPPoE lies in PPTP, conceived by Microsoft, more powerful but heavier.
