Manzat

Manzat is a common French, chief town of the Canton of Manzat, located in the department of the Puy-de-Dôme and in the area of Auvergne. Located in the solid mass of the Mounts Domes, Manzat is adherent Regional natural park of the volcanos of Auvergne . In 2000 the solid mass of the Monts Domes became Site classified . Since January 2006, Manzat is served by the highway 89 and is with the crossroads of the A89 and A71. Manzat is to 30 km, the North-West of Clermont.

Geography

The commune is located at the north of the Chaîne of Puys. The borough of Manzat is on the Roman Voie which connected Riom to Évaux-the-Baths.

History

Origin of the name

The name of Manzat, probably from very old origin and prélatine, would come from the word “Mannius” then “Mannicius”. In 1163, Manzat is called “Amanziaco” then “Manzac” in 1392.

Antiquity

The museum of Clermont has a Gallo-Roman cylindrical bottle, out of glass, collected in 1880 and which contained calcined bones. In the middle of these bones an average bronze of Domitien was. An anonymous text of the 19th century mentions that a Mr Vallet had a military terminal of Roman epoch. Part of the Roman Voie passer by in Manzat was still visible in the middle of the 20th century, on the level of the locality of the Montel.

The Middle Ages

Guillaume de Manzat, damoiseau and Agnès, his wife, made a sale with the Chartreuse of the Port-Sainte-Marie in 1299.

First World War
The war of 1914-1918 made 80 dead, that is to say a number higher than the French average.
Second world war
The Canton of Manzat was a ground of maquis, in particular for ftp under the direction of Jean Bac. Two resistant of the commune was shot by the Germans. Two Stèle S were high in their honor; one at the village of Bessède, the other on the roadside which leads to Châteauneuf-the-Baths. A war memorial commemorates the memory of Manzatois died for the France. A Camp of internment was installed in Manzat during part of the war.

This blazon, adopted by the municipal council in deliberation of March 15th 1959, was composed starting from the Genêt, plant decorative which is not rare on the territory of the commune and which refers in the name of the owner of the parish of Saint-Broom.

Religious heritage

The church

The church is of Style Gothic. It was devoted on May 5th 1872 per Mr. the abbot G. Thistle and replaced a church of the 11th century, smaller, was strengthened and of Romance Style, of which he did not arrive any representation but which resembled the church Saint-Leger de Royat before his restoration of the 19th century ( Voir engraving ). The current church contains several remarkable elements:
  • a statue Notre-Dame of pity (or Piéta) out of wood of drowning 17th century given by the Family of Pontgibaud and coming from the vault known as of Pontgibaud to the Chartreuse of the Port-Sainte-Marie ( See photo )
  • the chorus of the church is decorated of Stalles out of wood of the 17th century which comes from the conventual church of the Chartreuse of the Port-Sainte-Marie.
  • the church contains also two Bas-relief S out of wood; one, of the 17th century, represents Saint-Pierre; the other appearing Saint-Paul is dated from the 18th century.
