Manzanares (Spanish river)

The Manzanares is the river which crosses Madrid. Long from 92km, it is born in the Sierra from Guadarrama, crosses the town of Manzanares el Real, skirts Madrid on its west coast before going to throw itself in the Jarama, one of the affluents of the Tage.

The traveller who comes to Madrid often astonishes that the city is crossed only by one river of so low scale. It is quite obvious that the site of Madrid was not intended to receive a town of this importance, and it is for political reasons that the Spanish capital was moved in 1561 by Philippe II of Tolède to Madrid. Hitherto, it was not that about a royal field of hunting.

The disproportionate growth of the town of Madrid had annoying consequences on Manzanares. Whereas in the Fifties the inhabitants of Madrid could bathe there, it is today a river almost drained by the requirements out of water for the capital and polluted by the human activity. The town hall of Madrid however decided to give again its place with the river. Until surrounded today by the M30 (ring road), the burial of the belt of highway will make it possible during 2007 to create a vast park on the two sides of Manzanares.
