Manufrance

Manufrance is famous and emblematic company inhabitant of Saint-Etienne, founded by Etienne Mimard and Pierre Blachon in 1885, which was made known in the whole world by its catalog of mail-order selling, and its newspaper, the French Hunter . It produced inter alia weapons, cycles, sewing machines, articles of fishing…

Because of the strikes which have occurred in 1937, the founder renonça with his preliminary draft to bequeath his actions to his employees and transferred them to the town hall from Saint-Etienne. This is at the origin of the crisis which occurred in the Années 1970, when the communist town hall directed by Joseph Sanguedolce had to manage the difficulties of the company as an owner. Since the death of the founder, in 1944, when it bequeathed to the municipality of Saint-Etienne half of the held actions, the management of Manufrance had done nothing but decline, because of absence of dynamism and bad management of the families which followed one another at its head, until final disappearance in 1986.

The site of manufacture was rehabilitated in tertiary pole, with the Center of the Congresses of Saint-Etienne, the seat of the Chamber of commerce and of industry of Saint-Etienne/Montbrison, the Spacecraft planetarium and centers of it teaching with the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of the mines of Saint-Etienne and the National college of business of Saint-Etienne.
