Manuela Malasaña

Manuela Malasaña Oñoro , born with Móstoles, 15 years old, profession embroidering-machine, was one of the victims at the time of the Soulèvement of the Back of Mayo on May 2nd, 1808 with Madrid (Spain), rising of the people against the French troops of Napoleon. She lived in the street san Andrés nº 18.

As much of other young inhabitants of Madrid, this girl took part in the defense of the Artillery Park of Monleón (current place of the Dos of Mayo ), whose chiefs were Daoíz and Velarde (deaths also in this combat). she was made prisionnière and carried out under the charge to be found with a weapon on her. They were scissors. She was buried with the Hospital of Buena Dicha (in the street of Silva) which had been founded in 1594 and which accommodated poor people. In this place much casualties of this day of May 2nd were neat and were buried much caídos.

The name of Manuela Malasaña appears with the nº 74 in the list of the victims which the military and municipal files of Madrid preserve. According to a study made in 1908 there were 409 died identified and 170 wounded. Its portrait is in the Sala of Heroínas del Museo del Ejército .

Manuela was to be known in its district for its youth and the sympathy which it released. The fact of dying so young person and by giving its life to the cause of freedom, made that was created around its memory a great heroin legend. Madrid dedicated to its memory a district: the barrio of Malasaña. Móstoles also dedicated to him a street and a station of subway on Line 12.
