Mantinée
Mantinée (in Greek old Μαντίνεια / Mantíneia ) is small a City-State Greek of the south-east of the Arcadie, in the north of Tégée, created by the unification of five villages towards 500 av. J. - C.
With the {{Ve}} century it was in good terms with Sparte; it did not take share with the war that other Arcadiens made in Sparte towards 470 and rendered great services to the Spartans at the time of the revolt of the Hilotes in 464.
Towards 450 Mantinée became a moderate democracy.
During the Peloponnesian War, it was combined with Athens, Argos and Élis. The battles of Mantinée was the place in 418 of a decisive victory of Sparte against the Athenians and Argiens.
With the {{IVe}} century, Mantinée was attacked by the Spartans directed by Agésipolis I {{er}} and was dismantled in villages (385).
After the Bataille of Leuctres (371) the city was restored 370 and belonged to the Confédération panarcadienne founded at that time.
It was the place of another battle in 362 between Sparte and Thèbes. This battles was a total victory for Thèbes but its best general, Épaminondas found death there.
In 222 the king of Macedonia, Antigone III Doson took the city. All its inhabitants were sold like slaves.
