Mantaro

The río Mantaro ( Hatunmayo in Quechua) is a river of the center of the Peru pertaining to the Amazonian Bassin.
Geography
It takes its source with the Lac Junín to 4.080 m with the top of the sea level. It crosses the areas of Junín (provinces of Junín, Yauli, Jauja, Concepción and Huancayo), Huancavelica and Ayacucho, before returning in the area of Junín by the Province of Satipo where it joins the Río Apurímac to form the Río Ene. Its basin includes also the Région of Pasco (upstream of the lake Junín).
Human activity
The river irrigates the valley of Mantaro which is the principal one and the broadest inter-Andean valley of Peru (: 180000 ha of surface). This valley is the source of supply in foodstuffs most important of the town of Lima.In the Province of Tayacaja, Area of Huancavelica, the central hydro-electric of Mantaro provides nearly 50% of the electrical energy of the country.
