Football manceau before the million u.a. 72

Until 1985, two clubs share the first roles of football manceau and resident of Sarthe: the Sporting union of Mans (USM) and the Olympic stadium of Maine (SOM). If the first gently starts to descend the levels from national football (of the 2nd division in 1972-1973 with 4th in 1981-1982); the second, supported by the Mutual insurance companies of Mans (today MY ), progresses until the 3rd division in 1983-1984. But the assistance of the insurance company arrives at its limit. Any idea of passage to the Division 2 is completely unrealistic. It is in this context that under the impulse of Roland Grandier, then President of the SOM, the fusion of the two rival clubs become possible.

birth of the million u.a. 72

The June 12th 1985, the two principal clubs of Mans amalgamate to give rise to the Mans Union Club 72 (million u.a. 72). On proposal of the Town hall carried out by Robert Jarry, the club adopts the red and yellow colors of the old commune of Mans, being reproduced in particular on the blazon of the city. The objective of the new team, then in the 3rd division, is the rise in Division 2. The trainer Christian Gourcuff joined Mans in June 1986. He will make possible the rise in the 2nd division in May 1988. The manceaux ones go down again in the 3rd division the following year, before going up in the 2nd division immediately.

The Nineties and the beginning of the year 2000

The Nineties passed to " stagner" in medium of table of D2. On the other hand, the center of drive of Pincenardière develops. It will be made a fame national and European by detecting future talents, the most known player having passed is undoubtedly Didier Drogba there. The club evolves/moves little, at least, from an external point of view. Certain figures will durably mark the club for this period, with the image of Olivier Pédémas. In 1999, the club carries out a beautiful performance by reaching the semi-finals of the cut of France, eliminated by Sedan. This experiment marks the generation of the years 2000.

Season 2003-2004: first passage Leagues 1 of them

The beginning of the year 2000 marks a new step. The players trained with the club have their chance in CFA, then Leagues 2 of them. Let us quote for example, Laurent Bonnart, James Fanchone, Yohan Hautcoeur or Frederic Thomas. It is partly thanks to the latter that the group takes down the rise Leagues 1 at the time of the season 2002-2003 of them. This one will appear a first difficult exercise among the elite, but, undoubtedly, an experiment enriching for the continuation. The leaders decide to recruit players experienced for this first season: foreign players like Norwegian daN Eggen South-African Thabang Molefe or Rumanian Sergiu Radu. The results are not with go. Thierry Goudet, the trainer for 4 years, has been dismissed during the year. Its successor Daniel Jeandupeux does not manage to turn over the situation and the club finishes the season in the 19th place, the club is relegated in Ligue 2. True a " purge" is made in manpower the following season. The training policy starts to bear its fruits. The arrivals of Daisuke Matsui coming from Japan, of the trainer Frederic Hantz or of the attacker Georges Ba, inter alia, make it possible the club to immediately go up Leagues 1 of them while finishing 2nd of League 2 behind the ACE Nancy Lorraine.

Season 2005-2006: The return of the million u.a. 72 Leagues 1 of them

After the difficult experiment two years earlier, the leaders change their policy of recruitment. The club makes confidence has young people, even very young players who are trained with the club, finish their formation with the team reserves or have their chance directly Leagues 1 of them. This policy, related to the fact that the club has one of the more small budgets of League 1, makes that current professional manpower is one of young people great European championships.

Over the 2 seasons (2005-2006 and 2006-2007), the club is maintained in the middle of table. Often in race for the accession in European places, the team is not able to be maintained in these places and must itself satisfy with the medium of table. The million u.a. 72 remains one of the clubs of the elite with " small budget" , while preserving an aspect enough " familial". that is possible thanks to the good output of the training center and with the recruitment of young players. The million u.a. 72 is in addition, with FC Lorient, the club less tried out league 1 with only 3 seasons with the meter. Several international players appear from now on in manpower, quote for example, Daisuke Matsui, Kofi Dri Romaric, Stephan Sessègnon, Gervinho or Marko Basa as well as international French hopes (Mathieu Coutadeur and Mamadou Samassa).

The club started in August 2007 its 4th season Leagues 1, the 3rd consecutive one of them. It was, for the first of its history, at the head of League 1, after 2nd and 3rd days.
