Manlius

Manlius was the first Roman soldier awaked by geese of Capitole, when the Gallic ones reflect with bag Rome into -390. Capitole always resisted the attacks of the invaders, when Brennus, the Gaulois chief, decided to take it by surprised the night. The Gallic ones climbed the hillsides silently, but the crowned geese of the temple of Junon heard them. Panicked, it are reflected to shout and thus awoke the defenders. Manlius pushed back, says the legend, to him only the first wave of enemies, and then gave alarm, which made it possible to the defenders to push back the Gallic ones.

It accepted later the nickname of Capitolinus , in remembering its exploit. Thereafter, wishing to help the plebeian ones involved in debt, it concealed part of the gold required by Brennus, but that the Roman general Camille had recovered. This one made it stop, and it was carried out according to the habit, i.e. that it was thrown of the rock tarpéienne, escarpée cliff rather near to Capitole.

This history gave the expression " later; The rock tarpéienne is close to Capitole" , that one uses to say that death is close to glory…
