Manila hemp

The Abaca ( Musa textilis ) is a species of Bananier originating in Philippines which also pushes in Borneo and Sumatra. It has a typically economic importance, being collected for its fiber, being called Manila hemp, extracted broad, oblong sheets and stems. On average, this plant grows until approximately 6 m height. The fiber is used to manufacture strings and cords. The name of the plant is sometimes written “abaka”. It was cultivated initially with large scales with Sumatra in 1925 by the Dutchmen, who had observed the culture in Philippines of it aiming to the manufacture of rope.

The vernacular name comes from Spanish Abacá
