Manifestation of February 14th, 2006 in Strasbourg
From 30.000 to 50.000 people according to the sources took part in the Manifestation of the February 14th 2006 with Strasbourg against the directing Bolkestein organized by the European Confédération of the trade unions (THESE).
This figure is higher than the number of the awaited demonstrators, of 25.000 people. The gathering made following the organized menifestation the March 19th 2005 with Brussels and the manifestation of the Altermondialiste S, supported by the trade unions non-members of THESE like CUS.
The organizations most represented were the CGT, the others trade union S French, the German DGB, the Luxembourg and Belgian trade unions, but also of many trade unions of the Eastern-European countries.
In spite of fears of the authorities, following violences which had taken place a few days earlier at the time of the manifestation of the Docker S against the draft Directive with regard to them, no overflow was raised.
A few days before this gathering, a compromise was passed between the two political independent groups of the the European Parliament (EPP and PSE) which emptied the Directive its most discussed provision, the Principe of the country of origin. The directive thus was adopted in this form very edulcorated compared to its original version the February 16th. This last misadventure was criticized by the countries finding it too not very liberal (Great Britain, Eastern European country…) and others like, the group GUE-NGL or 29 of the 31 French Socialists, who underline the risks for many public service sectors.
